web1It is never too early to think about scholarships! At UALR, the priority deadline for most private scholarships is February 1 of every year.

Here at the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS), the end of the spring semester brings several great events: summer break, graduation, and the AHSS awards ceremony. Every year our 11 departments come together on this day to publicly recognize and reward the excellent work of our students. These awards are sponsored by the college, by the individual departments, and by private funding from our generous donors.

We are thrilled to announce that this year we were able to award over one quarter of a million dollars to our students!

Over 100 students received these awards, many of them received multiple awards. Some were recognized for original research projects that they also showcased in our AHSS Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium. Some were given awards for their talents in music, theatre, and dance performance. Others were awarded scholarship and prize monies for their creation of poetry and prose. A number of our students in various departments received awards for exemplary papers written for their courses, some for their activism, and others for their creation of art. A large number of our students were awarded for excellence in general scholarship.

web2Whatever their discipline, whatever the award criteria, we recognize the hard work of all of these students. We take great pride in that work, and in the brilliant successes of our students and their faculty mentors. We also take great joy in seeing our students’ hard work rewarded. The funds associated with these awards aid our students in covering tuition and fee costs, book purchases, study abroad expenses, and many other costs.

Clint Brockway, a graduate student in the Master of Arts: Interdisciplinary Studies program won this year’s Stonewall Scholarship, awarded by the UALR Department of Sociology and Anthropology. “The amount of this award has allowed me to start planning for data collection for my master’s thesis,” says Brockway. “Without it, I’m not sure how I would be able to gather the information I need to write my thesis and graduate. It has been a life-saver!”

As our students are gearing up for the fall semester, we’d like to remind them to find out more about scholarships within AHSS by reviewing the list privately funded college scholarships and talking to their academic advisors. web3
